Two Ways to Write the Coordinated or Compound Sentence Using a Semicolon


3 Rules

1   The semicolon connects two independent clauses.

2   Remember, the thoughts must be closely related.

3   Finally, the semicolon is rarely used.


Pattern 1:
Independent clause; independent clause.

1   Next week is Spring Break; classes will be canceled.

2   Go to the island; the beach will revitalize your spirit.


Pattern 2:
Independent clause; conjunctive adverb, independent clause.
(some common conjunctive adverbs: furthermore, in addition, moreover, however, nevertheless, in fact, of course)

1   I'll see you all in class the following week; hopefully, you will be refreshed.

2   There are no assignments during the break; consequently, you should enjoy yourself.
